Why NOT Riga? Close, But No Cigar.

Welcome to my third post* (you’ve got stamina!) Riga’s wonderful, but nobody’s perfect ©.

Most cities look attractive when viewed selectively. Riga is no exception.

The question is not whether Riga can work, but for whom, under what assumptions, and with which blind spots addressed early.

🌡️ Challenging Climate

The annual average +6°C is whopping 4–6°C cooler than most European capitals. The sea rarely tops 18°C, and winters are long and dark. Reward? Summer sunsets at 2220 hrs. Pretty nice, right?

🛤️ Infrastructure Hurdles

  • Roads are, well, uneven… That’s hard on your car. Though in Centrs, I barely drive 3,000 km per year.
  • Traffic jams hit rush hours on main routes, but traffic is generally light.
  • Oddly, no train links Europe, and long overdue due to cost overrun, RailBaltic’s going to skip Riga (?!) – international project (mis)management for you.

🏙️ Lifestyle and Market Limits

  • The job market favours IT, tech, finance & pharma; salaries lag elsewhere.
  • In Centrs, Riga’s beauty shines, but Soviet-era districts, Moscow Forschtadt (where Russians have settled for centuries), and other areas with dilapidated buildings appear gloomy. Solution? Settle in nicer zones to avoid the downsides.
  • Latvian? Simply brutal. Declensions, cases, conjugations, prefixes, and suffixes — hundreds of exceptions. Good news? You can learn the basics in six months (as I did), and younger generations usually speak English. NB, in fact, kids even prefer to interact in English among themselves 🤔
  • Bureaucracy? Some report permit issuance delays, although mine was smooth.
  • Medical diagnostics such as MRI face delays, both for the test and for the report. Very good doctors may have a 1 to 6 months-long waiting list, while just good ones are available tomorrow…
  • Still, Riga’s a vibrant capital with great cafes and kid-friendly spaces. If you are not too sensitive to the cold and are ready to invest in language study, it is very comfortable, safe, and pleasant.
